Congressman Jim Himes is a longtime supporter of the Carver community. Today, he and members of his staff visited the Carver Community Center where they learned more about the breadth and success of the many Carver programs throughout Norwalk and now in Bridgeport.
See the article here in The Hour about the Congressman’s visit, written by Hearst’s Tatiana Flowers.
Congressman Himes talked at length with Carver students. He learned about their studies and personal goals. And Carver kids had a host of their own confident questions they asked of Congressman Himes. It was a great day of learning for everyone!
At one point of the tour, Thamisha, an 11-year-old 6th grader at Columbus Magnet School, on short notice, asked probing questions of Congressman Jim Himes in our conference room with Carver staff and board members present.
Thamisha was poised despite The Hour journalist and photographers in the room, and she showed empathy when the Congressman talked about the tough decisions he has to make. Congressman Himes and his staff remarked that of all the schools and youth organizations they visit, Carver kids are some of the most joyful, engaging and focused.
When interviewed by Carver last summer for Carver’s blog, Thamisha, who aspires to be a doctor, described Carver this way: “Carver is a place where everyone is family. We help each other, we work together, we build stuff, and we have a lot of memories here. Carver is Carver. There’s no place like it. I can’t explain it. It’s just Carver.”
Congressman Jim Himes represents Connecticut’s 4th District in the United States House of Representatives where he is serving his fifth term. He is a member of the House Committee on Financial Services, serves as the ranking member of the NSA and Cybersecurity Subcommittee of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and is Chair of the New Democrat Coalition.
We are grateful to Congressman Himes and his staff for taking the time and interest to learn more about Carver kids and how the Carver community is “Building Lifetime Achievers.”
