Carver provides a strong base for nurturing children’s literacy development and providing various literacy experiences.

The role of after-school and summer programs is to provide complementary and different kinds of literacy purposes and experiences than those offered by the child’s school.  Carver fosters the social dimensions of literacy, with children sharing ideas, collaborating, and helping each other. We also address the cultural dimensions of literacy, such as assisting children to explore the literacy traditions of their families and communities.

Our after-school Program Coordinators (certified teachers) are naturally in alignment with school curricular goals, learning objectives and expectations, and content. They are consistent with Connecticut’s Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts Research-based Literacy Practices.

Carver utilizes the Reader's Workshop model, dedicating twenty minutes daily to student reading and journaling about language arts material received during the school day. Students log reading minutes. Reading Club students read a book of choice and share their thoughts in group discussions.

Among our numerous Literacy tools, Carver utilizes READ 180 for struggling students with school accounts, a comprehensive curriculum, instruction, assessment, and a professional development system to raise their reading achievement.
