Parent Engagement

Carver programming engages parents. Carver parent activities are offered in English, Spanish, and Creole.

The Norwalk Public Schools district provides this Parent Guidebook that covers many of the questions we know our families have.

Carver parent engagement activities include parent and student college tours; apple picking; technology classes; a financial empowerment series; drive-in movie nights; Lachat Town Farm (Weston, CT) extensive educational programs related to agriculture, the environment, sustainability, nutrition, and the arts; our annual Testimonial Dinner when students awards are given; International Day when students and their families share food and arts from their countries of origin; Teen Talent Nights; New Parents Nights; Build Together events; parents join their children on FIRST Lego (robotics) competition day; Data Nights (parents receive a presentation on standardized testing); and ESL/GED classes.

Other classes include Reaching a Higher Bar through the Common Core State Standards (CCSS); Standardized Tests; AP Classes; College Readiness; and workshops on subjects such as achievement in school and working with the NPS District.

Carver parents participate in regular, two-way communication with Carver involving program development and implementation as well as directly with our Program Coordinators, as they are their children’s teachers during the school day.

Carver makes great use of technology to keep communications open between staff, students and parents. School sites include Carver programs on their own websites, and some offer mobile apps to ensure parents have regular contact with staff.

Parents are encouraged to consider strategies of involvement: proactive/ preventative communication with teachers and Carver staff, independence (i.e., encouraging their children to take responsibility for their schoolwork), providing structure at home, and linking education to the future. Parents help less informed parents become more engaged.

Carver staff promote an open-door policy to maximize parental participation, especially for those parents unable to attend scheduled meetings.
