Carver’s Spring College Tour visits Claflin University!

By Michelle Chacko, 10th Grader, Brien McMahon High School

Alonzo Webster founded Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina in 1896; it is one of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities. There are approximately 2,000 students enrolled at the university. We walked around with Chelsea, our tour guide, who is a high energy, graduating Senior originally from Georgia. She’s an English Education major and is teaching 9th and 10th grade English at a local high school. This summer she will be moving to Washington, D.C.

The 49th annual Spring College Tour visits South Carolina State University

By Serenity Mayhew, 9th grader, Norwalk High School, and Amanda Fleurancy, 11th grader, Brien McMahon High School

The first school we visited on the 49th Annual College Tour was South Carolina State University. Ashley H. and Arabia S. were our tour guides and they excitedly walked us through the campus, weaving between brick buildings, discussing the culture and architecture of the university.

Nikki LaFaye, Carver's Director of Philanthropy, a graduate of this year's Greater Norwalk Chamber of Commerce Leadership Institute

We congratulate Nikki LaFaye and the entire Norwalk Leadership Institute Class of 2018 - 2019 on their recent graduation. Each member devoted time and effort to this important program. Clay Fowler of Spinnaker Real Estate Partners has chaired the Leadership Institute for the last two years. We are grateful for this year’s class committing significant time and effort in creating an internship program for Carver students.

Images from our after school program at CSMA in Bridgeport!

Carver is very enthusiastic about and proud of our partnership with the Classical Studies Magnet Academy (CSMA) in Bridgeport. This is a "themed" Pre-K to 8th grade public school in Bridgeport’s West Side neighborhood for more than 400 students. Its curriculum of classical literature, art and music utilizes the Paideia instructional methodology (traditional lecturing, coaching, and the Socratic method of extended discussion). Instruction is project-based, involving frequent assemblies, presentations and field trips. CSMA occupies a 123-year-old structure, the oldest school still in use by the district. The school also rents a nearby closed Catholic school for their Pre-K to 2nd grade students.

Norwalk Symphony Orchestra's NOT JUST FOR KIDS Returns!

Norwalk Symphony Orchestra’s (NSO) Not Just for Kids Program, a longtime Carver STEAM programming partner, expanded its contribution to six programs in Carver’s 2018/2019 school year! The new programming is conducted at Norwalk City Hall instead of at the Carver Community Center, though the beneficiaries remain Carver’s K-5 after school CASPER students.
